The Top Ten Co-Stars Who Hated Each Other
A close relationship of some type, whether romantic, professional or otherwise, is a lynchpin of most major motion pictures and TV shows. Just because two actors appear close while in character, however, does not mean that they feel that way once the cameras turn off. In fact, in several notable cases, their relationship became – to say the least – just a tiny bit hostile.
# 10: Jamie Foxx and LL Cool J, “Any Given Sunday”
Oliver Stone directed 1999’s Any Given Sunday, starring Jamie Foxx and LL Cool J as teammates – and rivals – on a struggling football team. The two had an occasionally tense relationship while in character, but that tension did not let up while out of character. In fact, the actors came to blows while on set in an incident that LL Cool J claimed was intended to help their scenes in the movie appear more realistic, but that Foxx did not appreciate. Fortunately, the two did manage to eventually bury the hatchet.
# 9: Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio, “Romeo + Juliet”
1996’s modern retelling of Shakespeare’s classic story of tragic romance was a critical and commercial success, but that does not mean its two stars always got along. Claire Danes, who played Juliet, was only 16 at the time, but she felt that Leonardo DiCaprio, who played Romeo, was not serious or focused enough on doing his job. Whenever the two were not actually filming, she ignored him.
# 8: Betty White and Bea Arthur, “Golden Girls”
No one really knows why Bea Arthur disliked her Golden Girls co-star Betty White so strongly – especially considering the fact that White is almost universally beloved by movie and TV fans – but is well known that she did. Some believe the hostility may have arisen from the fact that Arthur was a serious classical actress who was irritated by White’s cheery TV-actress disposition. For her part, White tried repeatedly to mend fences with her co-star, but without much success.
# 7: Debra Winger and Richard Gere, “An Officer and a Gentleman”
Debra Winger called filming the 1982 classic An Officer and a Gentleman one of the worst experiences of her life. Her issues were not just with the style of the film, however; she also strongly disliked her co-star Richard Gere, whom she referred to as a “brick wall.”
# 6: Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones, “Batman Forever”
Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey both played villains in Batman Forever in 1995, as Two-Face and the Riddler, respectively. However, their interests were apparently far from aligned when the cameras stopped rolling. Apparently Jones found Carrey so irritating that he refused to even eat lunch at the same table with him, and Carrey responded by trying to steal every scene in which they appeared together.
# 5: Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, “50 Shades of Grey”
50 Shades of Grey broke box office records when it was released in early 2015, but its success was certainly not due to the chemistry between its co-stars. Both Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan have indicated on more than one occasion that they do not particularly enjoy each other’s company. Promotional interviews for the film made it even more painfully clear that the two actors are nearly hostile when they have to spend time together.
# 4: Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, “Dirty Dancing”
Dirty Dancing is another iconic love story in which the chemistry between the co-stars stopped as soon as the cameras turned off. Swayze mentioned in his autobiography the lack of chemistry the two experienced while filming the 1987 classic. He said that Grey tended to be extremely moody and emotional, which made working with her difficult.
# 3: Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker, “Star Wars”
Few movies have had an impact on the world of film and pop culture that compares to that of the Star Wars series. Unfortunately, that impact was not enough for Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker (who played the robots C-3PO and R2-D2, respectively) to get along. Their feud apparently originated during the first film, when Baker felt Daniels was repeatedly rude and dismissive towards him, as well as others on set. So far, time has not been enough to bury this hatchet.
# 2: Bill Murray and Lucy Liu, “Charlie’s Angels”
Bill Murray played Bosley in the 2000 action film Charlie’s Angels, while Lucy Liu played Alex, one of the three Angels. For some reason, the two grated on each other immediately, with Liu eventually taking a swing at Murray after he demeaned her acting ability. The dislike between the two became so bad that Murray was replaced by Bernie Mac in the sequel, “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.”
# 1: Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, “The Notebook”
Countless fans list The Notebook as their favorite love story of all time. The 2004 story of the star-crossed lovers Noah, played by Ryan Gosling, and Allie, played by Rachel McAdams, who are destined to be together in spite of all odds is beloved by young and old. What many do not realize, however, is that Gosling and McAdams spent much of the filming process at each other’s throats over disagreements in how the characters were to be interpreted, and almost did not complete the movie. Fortunately, this story has a real-life happy ending; they eventually managed to resolve their differences, finish filming and even dated for about three years after the movie was released.
Which of these co-stars did you enjoy watching the most -- even if they did dislike each other?
